SHTF medicine???
I'd say one of the top ten things to have on hand in a SHTF situation is medicine. :fan: I'm just curious as to what everyone is stocking up on in the event the system collapses and your kids get sick. :hissyfit_m:Whats a good replacement for antibiotics, ect?? I've heard alot about collidal silver??

Re: SHTF medicine???
you can order antibiotics on Amazon.. Do your research as to what antibiotic treats what condition. Amazon sells quite a few different types that should cover most things.. Also keep allergies in mind..
Look under fish antibiotics on Amazon. Two Doctors recently confirmed what I already knew. They are the same stuff humans take. I cant stress making a printable guide enough. If the internet goes down we need good old fashioned notes.. also here are two of the best books around I have found on SHTF medical care.. You will have a better idea of what supplies you Ned after reading them. |
Re: SHTF medicine???
a 3 month or 1 year supply of medications, depending on how difficult they are to get.
+ antibiotics. Penicillin & Cephalexin. Cephalexin is normally proscribed for a bacterial lung infection. VERY good to have around. the penicillin helped make sure i didn't end up with an infection to go with a badly cut foot in 2006. in that case, i used duct tape instead of stitches. took 6 weeks to heal. on my Wishlist - a sewing kit for stitches, complete with small syringes with 50 micrograms Fentanyl. if you find yourself needing to be stitched up and don't want to pay some ER $X Thousand dollars for the 'privilege.' obviously you don't want to have an emergency be your first time doing stitches. maybe i should take some nursing classes or advanced first aid classes. |
Re: SHTF medicine???

#1Azithromycin #2Cephalexin #3Erythromycin #4Ciprofloxacin #5Amoxicillin Do a search on these meds and decide what it is you want and or need. Some people are allergic to certain kinds of antibiotics. I pretty much got a little bit of everything. Keep them stored in a cool dry dark place , and they should last for years. |

- researching the meds ...or... - not buying the meds Not trying to be too much of a pain in the tukas, but antibiotics aren't just weak little over-the-counter pills to be used willy nilly without a decent understanding of their application when you feel like it. Some ABX can be useless for a given infection, or might be useful but result in nasty reactions/interactions. For a good time (NOT), try Flagyl with alcohol. |
Re: SHTF medicine???
Don't forget iodine in case you are nuked! A few small bottles can save you and your family from radiation caused thyroid damage. There is plenty of info on the web on what doses to take for children and adults, and iodine is cheap.
Edit: It can also be used for water purification and of course to kill germs in wounds. |

Re: SHTF medicine???
Garlic is a good antibiotic. Three cloves equals a dose of penicillin. It is also anti-viral and anti-parasitic. You can save some of your crop every year for replanting, so you will never run out.
Cayenne- excellent for circulation. Actually what you really want is habanero peppers. Cayenne taken internally can stop a heart attack. Used internally or externally it can stop bleeding. Helpful for blood pressure issues. Aloe Vera - an excellent burn remedy. Plantain - great on stings and bites, can help pull bad stuff out of wounds. Activated charcoal - great absorber of toxins. Good for food poisoning. Can help detox many problems. Milk thistle seed - top healer for the liver. Hawthorn berries - helps heal and protect the heart. Gingko biloba leaves - increases circulation to the brain. Hot and cold alternating water or compresses - improves circulation to an injured area, speeding up healing. Enema bag - can be used to keep someone hydrated who is unable to take fluids by mouth. I pick up various braces and slings at the thrift store to add to my medical supplies. |

SuperSaver RX is also great: good quality, discreet packaging, and about a two-week delivery time (also, if your order doesn't arrive, they'll replace it). I've used them for years, but I don't have a Visa card anymore, and that's all they take. |

I knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew a guy that has bought some antibiotics from a place called United pharmacies. This guy said that United sold large bottles of some antibiotics such as Amoxicillan- 500 capsules for 55.00 and doxycycline- 250 tabs for 39.00. Supposedly this guy said he received his products in a timely manner and the shipping was only 7.50.

here is an example of the drug info on metronidazole. GENERIC NAME: metronidazole BRAND NAME: Flagyl DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Metronidazole is an antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Anaerobic bacteria are single-celled, living organisms that thrive in environments in which there is little oxygen (anaerobic environments) and can cause disease in the abdomen (bacterial peritonitis), liver (liver abscess), and pelvis (abscess of the ovaries and the Fallopian tubes). Giardia lamblia and ameba are intestinal parasites that can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea in infected individuals. Trichomonas is a vaginal parasite that causes inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis). Metronidazole selectively blocks some of the functions within the bacterial cells and the parasites resulting in their death. PRESCRIPTION: Yes GENERIC AVAILABLE: Yes PREPARATIONS: Tablets: 250 and 500 mg. Tablets, extended release: 750 mg. Capsule: 375 mg. Cream: 0.75% and 1%. Lotion: 0.75%. Gel: 0.75% and 1%. Injection: 5 mg/ml STORAGE: Metronidazole should be stored at room temperature and protected from light. PRESCRIBED FOR: Metronidazole is used to treat parasitic infections including Giardia infections of the small intestine, amebic liver abscess and amebic dysentery (infection of the colon causing bloody diarrhea), bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas vaginal infections, and carriers of trichomonas (both sexual partners) who do not have symptoms of infection. Metronidazole is also used alone or in combination with other antibiotics in treating abscesses in the liver, pelvis, abdomen and brain caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. Metronidazole is also used in treating infection of the colon caused by a bacterium called C. difficile. (Many commonly-used antibiotics can alter the type of bacteria that inhabit the colon. C. difficile is an anaerobic bacterium that can infect the colon when the normal types of bacteria in the colon are inhibited by common antibiotics. This leads to inflammation of the colon (pseudomembranous colitis) with severe diarrhea and abdominal pain.) Metronidazole also is used in combination with other drugs to treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) that causes stomach or intestinal ulcers. Metronidazole topical gel is used for treating acne rosacea, and the vaginal gel is used for treating bacterial vaginosis. DOSING: Metronidazole may be taken orally with or without food. In the hospital, metronidazole can be administered intravenously to treat serious infections. The liver is primarily responsible for eliminating metronidazole from the body, and doses may need to be reduced in patients with liver disease and abnormal liver function. Various metronidazole regimens are used. Some examples are listed below. Amebic dysentery: 750 mg orally 3 times daily for 5-10 days Amebic liver abscess: 500-750 mg orally three times daily for 5-10 days Anaerobic infections: 7.5 mg/kg orally every 6 hours not to exceed 4 grams daily Bacterial Vaginosis: 750 mg (extended release tablets) once daily for 7 days. One applicator-full of 0.75% vaginal gel, once or twice daily for 5 days. Clostridium difficile infection: 250-500 mg orally 4 times daily or 500-750 orally 3 times daily Giardia: 250 mg orally three times daily for 5 days Helicobacter pylori: 800-1500 mg orally daily for several days in combination with other drugs. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): 500 mg orally twice daily for 14 days in combination with other drugs. Trichomoniasis: 2 g single dose or 1 g twice Rosacea: apply topical gel 0.75-1% once daily DRUG INTERACTIONS: Alcohol should be avoided because metronidazole and alcohol together can cause severe nausea, vomiting, cramps, flushing, and headache. Metronidazole can increase the blood thinning effects of warfarin (Coumadin) and increase the risk of bleeding probably by reducing the break down of warfarin. Cimetidine (Tagamet) increases blood levels of metronidazole while cholestyramine reduces blood levels of metronidazole by reducing its absorption. Metronidazole should not be combined with amprenavir for treating human immunodeficiency disease (infection with HIV) because amprenavir contains propylene glycol. Metronidazole blocks the breakdown of propylene glycol in the liver leading to accumulation of propylene glycol in blood. Accumulation of propylene glycol could cause seizures, increased heart rate, and lead to kidney failure. Metronidazole increases the blood levels of carbamazepine, lithium and cyclosporine though unknown mechanisms. Serious reactions may occur if these drugs are taken with metronidazole. PREGNANCY: Metronidazole is not used in early pregnancy because of potential adverse effects on the fetus. NURSING MOTHERS: Metronidazole is excreted in breast milk. Nursing mothers, because of potential adverse effects on the newborn, should not use metronidazole. SIDE EFFECTS: Metronidazole is a valuable antibiotic and is generally well tolerated with appropriate use. Minor side effects include nausea, headaches, loss of appetite, a metallic taste, and rarely a rash. Serious side effects of metronidazole are rare. Serious side effects include seizures and damage of nerves resulting in numbness and tingling of extremities (peripheral neuropathy). Metronidazole should be stopped if these symptoms appear. Reference: FDA Prescribing Information USES: Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections. HOW TO USE: This medication should be taken with food or a full glass of water or milk to prevent stomach upset. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection. SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness, headache, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, change in taste sensation or dry mouth may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Unlikely but report: seizures, loss of consciousness, tingling of hands or feet. Very unlikely but report: unsteadiness, mood/mental changes, rash, itching, sore throat, fever, severe stomach pain, vomiting, vaginal irritation. This drug may cause urine to darken in color. This is not harmful. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history especially of: liver problems, seizure disorders, any allergies. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection). Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this medication and for at least 3 days after finishing this medicine because severe stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, headache and flushing may occur. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this drug. It should not be used during the first 3 months of pregnancy and used with caution during the last 6 months. This drug is excreted into breast milk and using it while breast-feeding is not recommended. Consult your doctor. |

Pine needles can be an all-season source of vitamin C, and sunlight is a source of vitamin D. Both can be good immune-system boosters.

Re: SHTF medicine???
A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas. He said the expression 'going bananas' is from the effects of bananas on the brain. Read on:
Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!! (THERE ARE SO MANY OPENINGS TO THIS ONE!!w) This is interesting. After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again. Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet. Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system. Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer fr om heartburn, try e ating a banana for soothing relief. Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels u p and avoid morning sickness. Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation. Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady. Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan. Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack. Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%! Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape! So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, 'A banana a day keeps the doctor away!' PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit ! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> |

Re: SHTF medicine???
Regular iodine from the store can be used as mentioned below. I have no idea whether this works or is safe (if you paint it on a wound it must be somewhat safe), but I would certainly try if placed in that position....
From http://www.ki4u.com/goodnews.htm When fallout is first anticipated, but has not yet arrived, anyone not already sheltered should begin using their N95 particulate respirator masks and hooded rain ponchos. Everyone should begin taking Potassium Iodide (KI) or Potassium Iodate (KIO3) tablets for thyroid protection against cancer causing radioactive iodine, a major product of nuclear weapons explosions. If no tablets available, you can topically (on the skin) apply an iodine solution, like tincture of iodine or Betadine, for a similar protective effect. (WARNING: Iodine solutions are NEVER to be ingested or swallowed.) For adults, paint 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm each day, ideally at least 2 hours prior to possible exposure. For children 3 to 18, but under 150 pounds, only half that amount painted on daily, or 4 ml. For children under 3 but older than a month, half again, or 2 ml. For newborns to 1 month old, half it again, or just 1 ml. (One measuring teaspoon is about 5 ml, if you don't have a medicine dropper graduated in ml.) If your iodine is stronger than 2%, reduce the dosage accordingly. Absorption through the skin is not as reliable a dosing method as using the tablets, but tests show that it will still be very effective for most. Do not use if allergic to iodine. If at all possible, inquire of your doctor NOW if there is any reason why anybody in your household should not use KI or KIO3 tablets, or iodine solutions on their skin, in a future nuclear emergency, just to be sure. |
Re: SHTF medicine???
Last week, my teenage son had a large boil come up on his lower abdomen overnight. It got ugly fast, and he was in a lot of pain. I tried to get him to load up and go to the emergency room that day, but he refused. I explained how dangerous it was, and that eventually he would end up going, sooner or later. I did get him to put a hot wash cloth on it as long as he could stand. It made it start draining. Sure enough, on the third day, he was ready to go. They took him into the triage nurse within ten minutes, and after a few questions, she sent us on in to an examination room. The Doctor saw him after another ten minutes (all this a new world record). I think they wanted us out of there fast. The Doctor got a clean towel, and put it down there and squeezed out the core (about the size of my little finger nail), gave us a prescription, and said see ya. The Nurse handed me a print out on MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus). She said to sterilize the bath tub and all bed sheets with bleach. Now, I'm having some small, raised red spots coming up on me, in the same area. Looks like I'll be going to the Doctor myself now. The Antibiotic they prescribed was Bactrim DS, an old Sulfa drug that has worked, and he's healing up good. ($4 at Wal*Mart). Some Staph infections have gotten to where it won't respond to Amoxil or Cipro and maybe Zithro. When my son wouldn't go to the doctor, I gave him some Amoxil I had stored, and when that didn't work, I gave him Cipro, which didn't seem to do anything either. Next trip to Mexico, I'll be laying in some Bactrim DS for the Med stash. If this Antibiotic hadn't worked, we might both be in big trouble now.

Plus another drug which I didnt end up taking. The Bactrim is working, just slow. How long did they prescribe it to your son for? 1 month here. Can you get this drug at Walmart?? Would be great to have. If it didnt kill the MRSA you'd have to take some more serious drugs to kill it. Crazy stuff. |

Wal*Mart had it on their $4 list. If I'd used the Insurance card, it would have cost $15. This was Bactrim DS. It has an extra compound to enhance to action of the Antibiotic. If you find yourself in a major event, and all the Hospitals are destroyed or the lines of people stretch around the block and back, I want to have the chance to treat my family with what I have. Would you want to stand in line to get your first dose of Cipro during an Anthrax attack, with a bunch of sick people? |
